Grandmaster Geary,
I am Sensei Todd Taganashi, Godan in Goju Ryu. I work as an executive bodyguard so I don't get to teach as much as I would like to. However, I still have a few private students who I tutor in Advanced Karate and Jeet Kune Do Concepts. My true spirit will always remain in Budo and I plan to return to full time teaching after I retire.

Thank you for your service to our country and to the citizens of Nebraska. Running for Governor is a big step and the political machine you face I am sure will be tasking. Please post events you will be holding in the area. One major concern of mine is the taxes in this state. It was either Kiplinger or Money Magazine I read a few months ago ranked Nebraska in the top 5 worst states for taxes (3rd). That is something we should not be proud of. The issue comes down to spending. We need to make decisions of "Wants" and "Needs". As a native South Dakotan, I am considering moving back there in next few years. Our youngest son Joshua is just entering High School and now is not a good time to move.
As a retired AF enlisted man, I am taxed on my retirement as well as my current employment. When I calculated all of my wife's and my state income tax and higher property tax compared to SD. I would save almost $7,000 a year by moving to SD. That would pay for a year of college for Joshua at USD. In looking at our neighbors to the south, Kansas does not tax military retirement. Hope I did not bore you with this but just voicing my opinion on an issue that is important to me and other citizens of this state.

I get the impression you are passionate about art. I know of a Nebraska artist who has recently given up teaching for her passion to make a living as a professional artist. I thought maybe you would appreciate her conservative message. If anything it could be one more vote!

I am trying to find a direction. I have been a martial artist for over 25 years. I have studied a lot of different systems. I am a 2nd degree black belt in TKD (when I was 19) I owned my own school in Georgia for 4 years. Currently, I am a military instructor at Ft. Wood, Missouri and a commissioned deputy sheriff were I teach CQB, defensive tactics, expandable baton, straight baton, PR-24, pepper spray, firearms etc.
Here's my problem, for the past 5 years, I have been studying Kenpo, I have been through a gambit of school changing such as restructuring of belt rank when I was a 2nd brown that took me to a red w/black stripe and a rotating curriculum. This school finally decided to go to a full MMA curriculum and not so much Kenpo. I was on black belt material when this occurred.
I left when another instructor opened his school. This instructor required I start as a 3rd brown, I did and for the past 2 years I have been training. I was going through my pretest for black when another told I that I was being strung along because I was good revenue. I approached my instructor and ask my instructor about this and about the rumor that he had no intention of having me pass rank, after a long conversation I found out it was true. So I left the school 3 weeks before my Black Belt test.
So I am trying to decide on what I want to do. I know it is not about the rank or color of the belt, but after a lot of sweat hard work and money, it would be nice to have the recognition. The only options I have is to go to another kenpo school in town and restart from the beginning (another 4-5 years) or accept my status as it is now and not be able to associate myself with Kenpo at a higher level.
Do you have any suggestions?
